The RNA site in the area was designated as an area of critical environmental concern and a plan and record of decision was created during the mid and late 20th century. The site was part of a grazing allotment, but received only minor use because of relatively steep slopes and long distance to water for grazing animals. Although there is no fence surrounding the RNA today, the site is only infrequently subject to trespass grazing at lower elevations.
It is a gorgeous drive thru the Powell Butte area into Prineville, accessing the Crooked River and the Ochoco Mountains, John Day and Eastern Oregon beyond.
